Manure

Manures are a great source of nutrients; they also bring beneficial microorganisms and can boost the Soil Organic Matter (SOM) content. Manures can however be delicate to work with, as some of them need to be aged or composted properly to prevent root ''burn'' when fresh and too potent.

Our manure products are locally-sourced from animals strictly fed on herbicide-free hay and/or feed (ideally local). They are aged to prevent root burn as needed.

Best practice with manure generally is to apply it to your soil in the fall to allow plenty of time for organic matter to break down, and for nutrients to become available to plants. Alternatively, spring application can be a good option so long as the aged manure is well mixed with the soil to prevent root burn (exposition to excessive nitrogen in the form of ammonia). Exceptionally, gentle types of manure can be used anytime without fear of burning; this is the case for alpaca manure, worm castings and insect frass. These can advantageously be top-dressed to feed your plants throughout the grow season.

During the grow season, manure tea can be an excellent source of nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Tips and tricks on preparing manure tea available here.

Each type of manure has its specific typical nutrient content, as presented in the table below.

Specific weight of manure varies depending on moisture content, with typical value at 400 kg/m3.
