Effective Microorganism (EM) - Activated
Activated EM™ contains effective microorganisms to boost growth in your soil and plants. Developed in Victoria, BC, these affordable liquid products contain live probiotics that support successful seed germination, nutrient uptake, water and soil quality, and much more. This multi-functional solution can help to reduce disease and improve overall plant health.
Manufacturer-suggested dilution rates:
- Soil application
- Mix into at least 100 times as much water (e.g. 10 ml into at least 1 L)
- Mix into at least 100 times as much water (e.g. 10 ml into at least 1 L)
- Foliar spray on outdoor mature plants
- Mix into at least 250 times as much water (e.g. 4 ml into at least 1 L)
- Foliar spray on houseplants or in a greenhouse
- Mix into at least 1000 times as much water (e.g. 1 ml into at least 1 L)
Application frequencies:
- Foliar spray on outdoors plants
- Apply weekly during the active growing season
- Increase this to two to three times a week during prolonged wet or humid periods for extra disease protection.
- Stop or drastically reduce spraying once the flowers open to prevent moisture-related fungal issues
Application rate:
- Soil application
- Apply between 1/3 cup and 1/2 cup per 1000 square feet
- Foliar spray on outdoor plants, houseplants, or in a greenhouse
- Spray until the leaves glisten, but stop before the liquid drips off.
- Use a fine mist to coat both the top and underside of the leaves (where the plant's stomata pores are located).
Application timing:
- Foliar spray on outdoors mature plants
- Spray early in the morning or in the late afternoon/early evening when temperatures are mild and winds are calm
- Avoid spraying during the heat of the day to prevent leaf scorch from the sun
Pre-harvest interval:
- Foliar spray on outdoors mature plants
- There is no pre-harvest interval because EM is made up of naturally occurring, safe microbes (like lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and phototrophic bacteria) rather than synthetic chemicals or pesticides.
- Give the harvest a standard rinse before eating to wash away any soil or the initial smell of the EM solution (like molasses).

| Notes | Activated EM may continue to off-gas, especially after transport and during warm weather. Loosen cap to relieve pressure in bottle as needed, then close tightly again. Yeasty-white particles floating at the surface of the product is normal and does not affect quality.
